There is hardly anything more disappointing for a wine lover than a bottle that tastes of cork. But don’t worry – we will explain what this means and what you can do in this case.
What is cork taste? Cork taste is caused by a chemical compound called TCA (trichloroanisole), which can form in natural corks. An affected wine often smells of damp cellar, wet cardboard, or mouldy wood. The taste is dull and lifeless – the aromas that make the wine distinctive are barely recognisable.
Cork in the glass – is that a problem? Not every cork in the glass means that the wine is corked! Sometimes corks simply break off when opening. A few floating pieces of cork are annoying but completely harmless. You can easily filter them out, and the wine remains enjoyable.
What to do if your wine is corked? Have you come across a bottle that tastes of cork? No problem! Please keep the bottle well sealed and contact our customer service. We will organise a solution for you – either a refund or a new bottle of wine. It is important that we can check the wine to identify any potential quality issues early and provide feedback to our winemakers.
